As the seasons change and the leaves begin to drop, it provides the perfect backdrop for a wedding. There’s still some sun around and the varied colours on the trees are never more beautiful. Autumn ignites a real sense of romance. That doesn’t mean it’s an easy season to dress for, though. That's why we're here to help with some great autumn wedding outfits.

Whilst everyone is ready to put on their comfy jumpers, roll up thick socks and drag the winter boots out from the back of the wardrobe, we'll have you thinking about how to impress at a wedding. After all, you’ll want to look great at such an occasion, whatever the season.

And while you’ll get all the details of who, when and where, the specifics of another important ‘w’ – what to wear to an autumn wedding – are left up to you to interpret.

We’ve gathered our suggestions to help you put together a great autumnal wedding outfit that’s sure to stand out from the crowd.

"If you can't be better than your competition, just dress better."

Anna Wintour

Dressing for a wedding doesn’t necessarily mean buying a whole new suit. We’re always recommending men mix and match items as a great way of getting a lot of wear out of each individual piece – and freshening up outfits you’ve worn previously.

So if you’ve worn your chino and blazer combination before, why not update it with a new waistcoat? The country-style look is hugely popular at the moment and this brown tweed waistcoat would ensure you’re bringing your A game to an autumn wedding.

It would look great with a blazer you already have, or you could treat yourself to the matching one. Team the combination with warm winter colours, such as navy or burgundy chinos, for a polished look.

Should I go for a waistcoat or not?

At Monks Clothing, we’re huge fans of waistcoats. They’re the perfect extra layer for the colder weather and, by changing just that one element, you can create a totally different look. Try this fabulous tan herringbone waistcoat with a navy blazer for a contrasting appeal, for instance.

But if you’re not a fan of waistcoats, don’t panic. You can create an equally great autumn wedding outfit with a blazer on its own.

You’ve just to make sure it’s of stand-out quality and fits you well – Claudio Lugli blazers, for example, are made using only the finest Italian milled fabrics, combined with unique styling to create a modern interpretation of classic tailoring. One of their grey or blue blazers would be a great addition to any well-dressed man’s wardrobe.

The brand’s shirts also embody the best of Italian design and quality, using punchy prints and opulent fabrics for a playful edge to your wedding outfit. Use them to inject a bit of personality and create an original look.

We love their purple shirt with contrasting polka dot pattern, the confident floral print shirt and their gorgeous pink shirt with botanical print inside. All of their shirts have a point of difference, making them amongst the most desired brand in the UK. What’s more, made from 100% luxury cotton – you’ll feel comfortable through the ceremony and reception.

And if it’s comfy style you’re after, Luke 1977 Freddie chinos have some give and stretch in the fabric, making them easy-to-wear for the whole day. With a slim tapered fit, they’re smart enough for an autumn wedding – but they’re versatile enough to be worn on other occasions too - mastering smart casual at work, for instance. You’ve just got to decide which colour to get first – grey, navy, black or stone.

What accessories do I need to wear?

In terms of accessories, wearing a tie is standard at weddings. But for when you inevitably take it off in the evening, their stylish shirts feature a contrasting fabric in the pocket so you’ll still have a pop of colour. Match Claudio Lugli’s attention to detail and remember to add your favourite cuff links – then you’ll be set to impress.

What shoes do you recommend for autumn weddings?

For a wedding outfit, you should pay close attention to the finishing touches of any outfit. After all, what other occasions will there be so many photos of you? So think from your head to your toes. We recommend:

  • Brogues. Hudson create some classic styles – the Keating, for instance, is adorned with a delicate punched pattern and designed with a rounded shape look. They’re laid back, but smart enough to step out in style at a wedding.

  • Boots. We’ve found Hudson Houghton chukka boots to be a popular choice for weddings all year around – but particularly perfect for an autumn celebration. They’re durable, comfortable and stylish – just as any good boot should be.

With the perfect outfit, you’ll be ready to embrace the romantic atmosphere of an autumn wedding. Layering up for the colder weather with a waistcoat, walking through the crisp leaves in your boots and avoiding spilling mulled wine on your new shirt – you’ll look the part and have a fantastic time.

For ladies, you can embrace your inner romantic with a number of autumnal outfits. Think along the lines of jewel colours, gorgeous accessories and closed-toe shoes.

Can I re-use summer outfits for an autumn wedding?

Definitely. As an easy starting point, you could decide to spruce up what you wore to a summer wedding. Unfortunately, you won’t get away with wearing your lightweight dress on its own, but treat yourself to a new coat and you’ll look fabulous until it’s time to dance yourself warm at the reception.

We love the Bellfield Benetto duster coat with waterfall collar, as well as their Lonata belted coat with detachable faux fur trim. They’ll serve you well all season long, so you won’t resent splashing out on a garment you can’t wear again.

If you feel the cold, you could opt for a long sleeved dress to keep you warm enough in a church ceremony. This black ICHI dress is a favourite of ours – it’s a comfortable and practical option, without having to compromise on style.

It will hug your curves, giving you a great silhouette and will be the perfect canvas to add some fantastic stand-out accessories. For instance, you could layer up delicate, colourful necklaces like this one from ICHI. The perfect finishing touch to an autumn wedding outfit.

Should I wear black to a wedding?

Whilst there’s some uncertainty about wearing black to a summer wedding, it’s never an issue in the colder months. So embrace the opportunity and assert your fashion credentials in a little black dress. It’s also worth finding out what colour and style of dress the bridesmaids are wearing – you don’t want to look like you’re trying to copy.

How can I experiment with new styles at a wedding?

Weddings are also a great occasion to wear statement pieces and Lavish Alice is the brand to shop to strike the perfect balance between sexy and directional dressing. For instance, the detailing on this embroidered dress is outstanding and sure to create a lasting impressing.

Lavish Alice also deliver on the latest trends with this abstract dress – it’s perfect for an evening wedding. Put on your favourite pair of heels and you’ll be ready to go.

Dresses aren’t your only option though – why not try a playsuit? They’re more wedding-appropriate nowadays and this tailored blazer playsuit is an absolute show-stopper. The pastel hue adds a feminine touch to the on-trend silhouette. You’ll be the best-dressed guest.

"Designers want me to dress like spring, in billowing things. I don't feel like Spring. I feel like a warm red autumn."

Marilyn Monroe

You’ve just got to remember those extra details that complete the look – your choice of bag, for example. It might be tempting to take your everyday handbag with plenty of room for your make up etc., but choose an elegant clutch to complement your outfit. You’ll just have to restrict yourself to taking lipstick and concealer.

After all of the excitement of a wedding, you’ll be grateful to get home and put your feet up in some comfy Homeys slippers – especially in the autumn months.

Great shopping tips

Shopping is meant to be enjoyable, not stressful. Follow our top tips to have a great time finding an outfit that’s going to look fantastic at that autumn wedding.

  • Go with a friend. Having a shopping buddy ensures you’ll always have a second opinion – just don’t fight over the best pieces.

  • Plan a coffee break (there’s a Costa by us). Keep your motivation (and caffeine levels) up with a coffee stop.

  • Shop for your shape and style. Worry more about whether something suits you, than whether it’s the latest trend.

  • Have a rough idea what you’re looking for. Not that we need an excuse to shop, but it’s a good idea to know beforehand if you’re shopping for something in particular.

  • Try more than one size on. Don’t be upset when something doesn’t fit or look right, just be ready to try an alternative.

  • Chat to the shop assistants. We’re here to help you – so if you’re wondering whether there are more sizes out the back, just ask.

  • Sign up to mailing lists. Keep up-to-date with sale previews and brand offers by signing up to email updates.

  • Stick to shopping online. You can always browse and order clothes from the comfort of your own sofa.

"Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live."

Gianni Versace
